PERSONAL TRAINING - The Evolution Revolution

Personal Training business development is an area that the health, wellness and fitness business has long misunderstood. It is required that Personal Trainers have recognized Personal Training Certifications (Which is GOOD!), but as an industry there are no levels of education, motivation or true leadership designed to assist the certified personal trainer on how to develop either their own personal business or how to develop an in-club personal training department. This culture of knowledge and focus on exercise prescription without instruction in business building training has created many roadblocks that impede the personal training potential. As a result, most have come to accept these self imposed roadblocks as “just the way it is” and the ability to see beyond those limitations is non-existent for many.

The Cure - The Evolution Revolution

Now, a new and dynamic business model has been created that can educate, motivate and lead any individual personal trainer or any commercial personal training business to success levels never before realized. It is a business model and not some kinda-sorta thought process that can only actualize mediocrity. Mediocrity? Yes. Many imagine their mediocre success to be a great success. That is because of the self imposed ceiling of true potential limits created by subscribing to "the old school" or the "school of false assumptionology".

The Old School - In the "Old School" personal trainers imagine that if they only "do their best everyday" they will realize true success. Then, add a sprinkle of motivational thought process and the scenario is primed for imagined success. No business plan? No structured performance tracking? Vague goals? Maximum success? NO

The School of False Assumptionology
("Assumptionology" - It is only a word created to help illustrate the concept involved)

In the "School of False Assumptionology" personal trainers and commercial personal training businesses imagine that if their personal trainers are highly certified and have advanced degrees new not yet fit members will "flock" to them for guidance. This is false. The health and wellness business long ago created a new member "orientation" imagining that this one-time event will create an exerciser for one who was not an exerciser prior. Many individual personal trainers use a similar approach in attracting new client prospects. Or, a "free session" or two with a personal trainer is offered to the not yet fit with the false assumption is that this process will suddenly and without warning create a dynamic whereby someone who IS NOT YET and not a regular exerciser will become one! F A L S E

People who are "not yet fit" need to be educated, motivated and then lead along a continuum of exercise prescription if they are to have any real hope of becoming a regular exerciser. Also, the personal trainer who is trying to encourage the new "not yet fit" person to commit to a regular exercise regimen is under-prepared to do so due to lack of training and guidance in this important aspect of client development.

The following are just a few of the self inflicted "roadblocks" that individual personal trainers trying to develop their true maximum potential face and also the same ones that commercial personal training businesses face:

1. Personal trainers don’t like to “sell”
2. Poor personal training referral process
3. Performance benchmarking in personal training is either completely ignored, or under utilized
4. Goals based in performance benchmarking standards are virtually non-existent
5. Inconsistent and sometimes non-existent conversion of new members to personal training
6. Inconsistent and sometimes non-existent conversion of existing members to personal training
7. Inconsistent and most times non-existent initiatives to recruit former clients back to training
8. Little if any interdepartmental awareness of department by department impact potential in personal training development
9. Personal trainers used as cross-responsibility staff (Used for tasks other than Personal Training development)
10. A culture that is based in “reaction” instead of “proaction” in personal training development
11. Failure to match new members with a personal trainer that specializes in their area of specific need for a “fitness assessment” (“evaluation”, et al)
12. Failure to engage personal training as a component of a lifestyle continuum and viewing it as a limited inventory that “might” lead the client to additional sessions
13. Failure to educate personal trainers about the absolute importance of scripting in building a success model in personal training
14. Falling prey to “budgeting” boondoggling

These are a few of the self imposed roadblocks that most individual personal trainers and commercial personal training businesses fall prey to. Maximum performance in personal training business development can only be visualized by those that are able to overcome the false assumption that, "That's just the way it is". The excuses, "Our members don't want personal training", "Our members think personal training is too expensive", "Personal training is only for our more wealthy members" and a host of other false assumptions that have crippled maximum performance potential in personal training for most personal trainers and commercial personal training businesses.
